ドイツの発明家、カール・フォン・ドライス男爵が1817 年に発明した自転車は、2 つの車輪がつながった木の梁にまたがり、馬車よりも速く走ることができる「ランニングマシン」でした。
しかし、カールの発明は彼の存命中にはあまり知られていませんでした。
自転車の人気が広まり始めたのは、1861 年にフランスの鍛冶屋ピエール・ミショーが「ベロシペード」(ペダルとクランク付き) を発表してからです。

1870 年頃、新しいタイプの自転車が登場しました。前輪が大幅に大きくなり、パワーとスピードが向上しました。「ペニーファージング」が誕生しました。乗るだけでもバランスを取る必要があり、高さのある大きな座席から落ちると命や手足を危険にさらす可能性がありました。

1903年にツール・ド・フランスが始まり、自転車の人口はさらに増えていきます……。
