物語が好きで、言葉が好きで、絵画が好きな小さな女の子がいました。 ある日、彼女は学校で不思議な本を見つけます。 壁の高い位置にたった一冊の本が置けるだけのスペースがあり、表紙に王冠が描かれた立派な本が飾られていました。 それは先生が女の子と同じくらいの年のときに、祖母からプレゼントされた本なのだそうです。 ”あれはたくさんの物語が詰まった魔法の本。今夜、貸してあげましょうか？” 先生は女の子に言いました。 女の子は喜んで本を借りて帰りました。 けれども、家に帰ってページをめくって見ると、たくさんの絵が描かれていますが、言葉がひとつもありません。 がっかりしていると、小さなささやきが聞こえてきました。 “言葉を想像してごらん” ”物語を想像してごらん” 女の子は絵だけを頼りに、言葉を想像し、物語を想像し始めるのでした。 --- みなさんは、絵本をどうやって楽しんでいますか？ 読んで？ それとも見て？ 想像して？ ぼくは絵本はどれにも当てはまると思います。そして、どれで楽しんでもいいと思います。 読んで楽しんでもいいし、絵を見て楽しんでもいいです。共通なのは、“想像すること”。 ぼくは絵本は必ずしも“理解する”必要はないと思っています。 「この絵本は〇〇ちゃんには早いねー」 書店で働いていた時、時おり聞いた言葉です。 年齢や学習の習熟度で、いまのお子さまの理解力に適した本を読んでもらう、という本の読み方が悪いわけではありません。 けれども絵本の読み方がそれだけではないことを、知っていてもいいのかな、と思ったりします。 文字のない本、というジャンルがあるのも、絵本だけですしね！ この絵本の女の子のように、絵だけでたくさんのことを想像するのも楽しいと思いますよ。 ちなみにぼくは洋書の絵本を読む時、先に絵だけで物語を想像します。 英語であれば、その後に精読しますが、他言語の絵本だと精読はしません。 だからもしかしたら精読していない絵本は、想像している内容と、実際の物語が違うかもしれません。でもそうゆう絵本の方がお気に入りになっていたりします。 洋書の絵本は読めないしなー、と考えていたら、もっと気軽に、楽しむことだけを考えてページを、めくってみてはいかがでしょう？ きっと世界が広がりますよ。 そんなことをあらためて考えてしまう絵本です。 The Whisper 邦題『わたしだけのものがたり』（フレーベル館） illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski ISBN: 0544416864 EAN: 9780544416864 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Binding: Hardcover Pub Date: October 06, 2015 Physical Info: 0.79 cms H x 28.58 cms L x 22.56 cms W (0.41 kgs) 40 pages Annotation: Two-time Caldecott Honor artist Pamela Zagarenski debuts as an author in this tender picture book about the magic of reading.
