ギザギザの山の頂上にペーパーリー村がありました。
村の家はすべて紙でできていました。繊細な紙の木々が美しい通りに太陽の光が差し込んでいました。
ペーパーリーの村人たちは紙のように薄く、軽やかでした。風を恐れる以外は幸せに暮らしていました。

人々は晩夏の風が吹くとポケットに石を入れて持ち歩きます。暑さが和らぐと、誰もが家を縛り、子供たちは突風で空中に舞い上がらないように赤いロープを持って学校へ歩いて行きました。風は毎年やってきて、五日半続きました。
いつもそうでした。

切ることと折ることに特別な才能を持つ子供が一人いました。名前はアーニャです。夏の終わりの風が過ぎ去ったある日、アーニャは紙の鳥たちに別れを告げて学校へ出発しました。

彼女がそれほど遠くまで歩いていないうちに、強烈な突風が彼女を倒し、本、はさみ、絵の具、鉛筆を散らかしました。
「でも、今は風の季節じゃないわ」と彼女は持ち物を拾い上げながらつぶやいた。「不思議ね」

急に季節外れの突風が吹き始めた紙でできた村。
紙の人々は強い風に困り果ててしまいます。

紙細工が得意なアーニャは、隣の山にあるフォレストリーという村に向かいます。

『The Paper Bridge』は、日本の紙の切り方と折り方である切り紙を使って作成されました。
Miyukiシリーズで知られるSeng Soun Ratanavanhの切り絵の絵本です。
