家、道路、草が生い茂った崖、海という感じ。そして町が広がっています。
父さんは鉱山労働者で、炭鉱の奥深く、そして海の下で働いています。

朝、目が覚めると最初にカモメの声が聞こえ、次に犬の吠え声が聞こえ、海岸沿いの道を車が通りすぎ、誰かがドアをバタンと閉めておはようと叫びます。道沿いではルピナスの花とアン女王のレース（ノラニンジン）が風にそよいでいます。
窓の外を見て最初に目に入るのは海です。
そして父さんは、その時間に海の底深くで石炭を掘っていることを、ぼくは知っています……。

石炭の町や村での少年の生活の中心は鉱山でした。彼は鉱山が見える場所で育ちました。石炭の粉塵の匂いは、蒸気ポンプやホイストの音と同じくらい彼にとって馴染みのあるものでした。
1800 年代後半から 1900 年代初頭にかけて鉱山町の少年だったとしたら、おそらく、鉱山で働きに行くという見通しに直面したことでしょう。 地下の過酷で危険で暗い現実の中で12時間の日々を耐える毎日。この物語の舞台となる1950年代に入っても、高校生の少年たちは父親や祖父の伝統を受け継ぎ、鉱山で働く将来を夢見続けていました。

鉱山町のそばにある光り輝く海と暗い石炭鉱山で働く人々の対比を美しく描き、そして近い将来すたれていくであろう街のもの悲しさも表現した、シドニー・スミスの絵本です。
