ルイス・キャロルの「The Hunting of the Snark（「スナーク狩り」）」は、1876年に初版が出版されたナンセンス詩です。

8つの「フィット」（章）で構成されており、ベルマン、ブーツ（靴磨き）、ボンネットメーカー、弁護士、ブローカー、ビリヤードマーカー、銀行家、ビーバー、ベーカー、そしてブッチャーという10人のキャラクターが不思議な生き物「スナーク」を探す海の旅を描いています²。

トーベ・ヤンソンは、1959年にスウェーデン語版の「The Hunting of the Snark」のイラストを依頼されました。ヤンソンのイラストは、キャロルの物語の美しさと奇妙さを生き生きと表現しており、彼女の独特の魅力がこの作品に息吹を与えています。

ヤンソンは、もともとヘンリー・ホリデイによるオリジナルのイラストを見ていなかったため、彼女のスタイルとホリデイのスタイルは大きく異なりますが、それぞれが詩の異なる解釈で表現をしています。
