貧しい木こりの家族が飢饉に苦しみ、継母の提案でヘンゼルとグレーテルは森に置き去りにされるます。二人はパンくずの道を残して家に戻ろうとしますが、迷い、魔女の住むお菓子の家にたどり着き、魔女に捕らえられてしまいます……。

グリムの古典童話「ヘンゼルとグレーテル」をホラー作家スティーブン・キングが再解釈したものです。
キングのテキストとセンダックの未発表イラストを組み合わせた絵本です。

センダックのイラストは、1990年代にEngelbert Humperdinckのオペラ「Hansel and Gretel」のプロダクション用に描かれたもので、未発表のままだったものです。
Sendakは2012年に亡くなっていますが、彼の遺産管理団体がキングにアプローチし、このプロジェクトが実現しました。

スティーブン・キングがセンダックのイラストを見てどんな文章を書いていくのかも気になる絵本です。
