荒野と海に挟まれた岬に、ぽつんと二つの家が壁を共有するほどに密集して建っていました。一つはキツネの家、もう一つはモグラの家でした。

夏になると、人々は街からボート遊びや凧揚げをしにやって来ました。夜は明るく、長く、賑やかでした。
モグラもその楽しいひとときに参加しました。キツネは毎晩クッキーを焼き、毎日ジャムとフルーツティーを煮出すのに忙しく、訪れる人々に提供するものがたくさんありました。

そして、あっという間に暖かい日々は終わりを、冷たい風が荒野を吹き抜ける朝が訪れました。
キツネは身震いしました。灰色の雲が流れ込んできました。
ヒースには蜘蛛の巣がきらめいていました。
秋が到来したのだ。
「今夜、君の家に行くよ」
モグラは言いました。「6時に」

観光客が来なくなりキツネとモグラだけが残った秋の岬。
モグラは毎晩キツネの家を訪れ、最高の椅子に座り、用意したお茶とお菓子を楽しみながら、キツネが読む本に耳を傾けます。
その本は「The Legend of the Scuffling Monster」というタイトルで、孤独な夜を過ごしすぎたアライグマが怪物に変身する話でした……。

気が良いけれども図々しいモグラと、真面目なキツネの物語。
前作「Finding the Way to Faraway Valley」と同様、豊かな色彩と物語が魅力的です。
