19世紀のイギリス人詩人・画家エドワード・リア（Edward Lear、1812-1888）。
リアは「ナンセンス文学」の父として知られ、リンボ（短いユーモラスな詩）や有名な詩『フクロウとプッシーキャット（The Owl and the Pussycat）』で有名です。

1812年、ロンドンに生まれたエドワード・リアは、21人兄弟の末っ子として、賑やかで想像力豊かな家庭で育ちます。
幼いエドワードは、いつも絵を描いたり物語を作ったりするのが大好きで、特に動物に魅了されます。
家の中や街角で、鳥や虫をスケッチし、家族を笑わせるようなおかしな詩を即興で詠んでいました。
けれども、幸せな幼少期に影を落とすのが「Demon（悪魔）」——彼のてんかん発作です。
この病は突然訪れ、エドワードを苦しめ、社会の偏見も招きますが、彼はこれを「ナンセンスの源泉」として乗り越えていくのです。

少年時代が過ぎ、ティーンエイジャーになったエドワードは、ロンドン動物園でインターンとして働き始めます。
彼は美しいオウム（特にマコーという種類のインコ）を描く任務を与えられ、熱心にスケッチを始めます。

「この12ヶ月間、私はオウムたちの間で心を動かされ、考え、見つめ、存在してきました。もし私が死ぬときに転生することがあったとしても、私の魂はインコ科の鳥類以外ではきっと落ち着かないだろうと思います」
