600年以上前に書かれた有名な物語集『カンタベリー物語』に登場する雄鶏。
雄鶏は「黄色と葦の中間の色をした」キツネの夢を見ています。
黄色と赤の中間の色はオレンジですが、600年前には英語にそれを表す言葉はありませんでした。

スコットランド女王マーガレット・テューダーの肖像画で、オレンジ色の袖が描かれています。1502年、マーガレットの母は彼女に「オレンジ色の袖」を買いました。黄色と赤の中間色を表すのに「オレンジ」が英語で使われたのはこれが初めてかもしれません。

ルビーのような鉱物は鶏冠石（リアルガー）。
古代の芸術家たちは、この結晶を粉末状に砕き、鮮やかな色合いながらも非常に有毒な顔料を作りました。この顔料は、ヒ素オレンジと呼ばれることもあります。

果物のオレンジがヨーロッパに伝わってから、ようやく色名が生まれました。
けれども色が先にあり、果物がその名前の由来になったのも意外なお話です。
