ガートルード・スタインはアメリカ、ペンシルヴァニア州の裕福なドイツ系ユダヤ人の一家に生まれました。1903年からパリで暮らし、セザンヌ、無名時代のピカソ、マチスなどの絵画の収集家でも知られています。ヘミングウェイに文章の手ほどきをするなど、思想文化に大きな影響をあたえてきました。
