The High Line: A Park to Look Up to

High Lineは、1934年に開業したニューヨーク・セントラル鉄道のウエストサイド線と呼ばれる高架貨物線路を再利用して作られた公園です。
ウエストサイド線は、マンハッタンのウエストサイドにある工場や倉庫に直接貨物を運ぶことができるように、街区の中央を通っていました。
しかし、1950年代からトラック輸送が増えて鉄道輸送が衰退し、1960年代には南部区間が廃止されました。1980年には最後の列車が走り、その後は放置されていました。

1999年に、地元住民であるジョシュア・デービッドとロバート・ハモンドがフレンズ・オブ・ハイラインという非営利団体を設立し、High Lineの保存と公共空間としての再利用を提案しました。
彼らはパリのプロムナード・プランテやシカゴのミレニアム・パークなどの事例に着想を得て、空中緑道や廃線跡公園として再設計することを主張しました。
彼らの活動により、ニューヨーク市や市民の支持を得ることができ、2004年には市の予算が割り当てられました。

High Lineの再開発は3期に分けて行われました。第1期はガンズヴォート・ストリートから20丁目までで、2009年にオープンしました。第2期は20丁目から30丁目までで、2011年にオープンしました。第3期は30丁目から34丁目までで、2014年にオープンしました。また、支線部分も2017年にオープンしました。

High Lineは古い鉄道の線路や構造物を残しながらも、現代的なデザインやランドスケープを取り入れた公園となりました。また、多様なアートやパフォーマンス、教育プログラムなども展開されています。High Lineはニューヨーク市の人気観光スポットとなりました。
