表紙にはたくさんの動物たちが小さな荷物だけをもち、感情を押し殺して歩いています。
タイトルから、彼らは故郷を追われ、新しい土地を目指して歩いているのだろう、とわかります。

そしてそのあとを追うように、骸骨の少年（？）と青いトキが着いてきています。
骸骨の存在は死を司り、トキは生と死の間を司る存在として描かれています。
出版社にこの本について著者のインタビューが掲載されていますが、読んでもらいたいテーマは”共感”と語っています。

移民というテーマは、島国の日本人には馴染みがないように思いますが、日本でも放浪の民の記録や、北海道への移住、土地を追われた人々は存在します。
だから全くの無関係のテーマでもないと思います。
物語を通して、移民の民の悲しみ、生と死がとても近い場所にある、など、少しでも想像することができれば、この絵本の目的は果たしているのかもしれません。
