印刷機が登場するずっと昔、そしてコンピュータやコピー機が登場するさらにずっと前、文章を複製できる機械は存在しませんでした。
根気強く、手で書き写さなければなりませんでした。
例えば、メソポタミアでは、人々は柔らかい粘土板に尖筆で文字を書きました。エジプトでは、葦の先端を斜めに切って作った葦ペンを使ってパピルスに文字を書きました。

ドイツの金細工師が、金属から堅牢な活版印刷を考案しました。そして長年にわたりこの研究に取り組みました。彼は、ブドウ栽培者がブドウを圧搾するために使用していた圧搾機に着想を得て、堂々とした外観の機械、印刷機を製作しました。
それに、活字から紙へ容易に転写できる、濃厚でペースト状のインクも開発しました。

そして彼は最初の本を執筆しようと決意しました。
1455年頃、彼は42行聖書を完成させました。それは1000ページ以上にも及ぶ、緻密な筆致で綴られた聖書です。

彼の名前はヨハネス・グーテンベルク。活版印刷の父として知られるようになったのです……。
