「SEED」は、インドのtarabooksから2024年に出版された、Tushar VayedaとMayur Vayeda による種をテーマにしたハンドメイドの絵本です。

種は「生きても死んでもいないが、生命の可能性を秘めている奇跡」と捉え、自然と人間の関係性や、種が持つ文化的・科学的意義を、Warli族の伝統的なアートとtarabooksのブックデザインを通じて表現しています。Warli族は自然と深いつながりを持ち、その知識が彼らのアートに内在しています。

Tushar VayedaとMayur Vayedaはマハラシュトラ州ガンジャド村出身のWarli族の兄弟で、幼少期を緑豊かな環境で過ごした後、ムンバイで学び、故郷に戻ってアートを追求しています。
彼らの作品は、Warliアートの伝統を基盤にしつつ、現代の視覚文化や旅行での経験を取り入れ、新しい表現やシンボルを生み出しています。彼らの作品は日本、パリ、スイス、ニューヨーク、香港など世界各地で展示されており、2019年には Ojas Art Award を受賞するなど、国際的に高い評価を受けています。

本書はtarabooksの創業者の一人、Gita Wolfによって四つのテーマで種について語られています。それぞれにページには、空間の広がりがそのまま思考の広がりへと拡張していくしかけが施されています。
