The Big Book of Climbing

世界の最高峰14座は、標高26,657フィート（8,000メートル）を超えており、国際登山連盟（IMC）では「8,000峰」と呼ばれています。これらの最高峰はすべてアジア大陸、具体的にはヒマラヤ山脈とカラコルム山脈にあります。

1895年、これらの14の峰のいずれかへの登頂が初めて試みられましたが、ナンガ・パルバット登頂への遠征は失敗に終わり、登山隊の3人が雪崩で亡くなりました。
1950年6月3日、モーリス・ヘルツォークとルイ・ラシュナルはアンナプルナの登頂に成功し、8000メートルを超える山に登頂した最初の人物となりました。リオネル・テレー、ガストン・レビュファ、そしてシェルパのアジバは、ラシュナルとヘルツォークの下山を助けるため、自らの登頂を断念しました。登山者2人はひどい凍傷に苦しみ、最終的には手指と足指の一部を失いました。

これらの偉業の多くは、シェルパ族の助けなしには成し遂げられなかったでしょう。シェルパ族とは「東の人々」を意味し、シェルパ族の大半が住むネパール東部の東チベットを指します。
