「ママ…」窓際の暖かい場所から、小さな猫が言いました。
「世界ってどれくらい広いの？」
「ええと」と母猫は言いました。「ソファからアームチェア、爪とぎを通り過ぎてこの窓辺まで」
「でも、世界はもっと広く見えるよ！」と小さな猫は言いました。
母猫は微笑みました。
「その通りよ。花壇を抜けて、池を通り過ぎて、フェンスを越えて、ずっと通りの先まで続いているのよ」
「世界はもっと広いの？」と小さな猫は鼻をガラスに押し付けながら言いました。
「広い世界？」と母猫は言いました。
小さな猫はうなずきました。
「それなら行って見てみましょうか？」

小さな猫はお母さん猫に連れられて外に出ました。草むらをぴょんぴょんと跳ねていると、小さな猫は世界が本当に広く感じられました。
「ママ、この広い世界は、僕が跳べるよりも広いの？」と小さな猫は尋ねました。
「それよりずっとずっと広いのよ」とママ猫は言いました。

小さな猫は外の世界を体験しながら、疑問に思ったことをお母さん猫に質問をしながらあちこちを散策していきます。
