おばあちゃんとおじいちゃんは森の奥深くにある小屋に住んでいます。
二人はこの小屋に長年住んでいて、子供たちをここで育て、今では孫たちの成長も見守っています。
がいこつのジョンは、以前から教室の隅で、子供たちの理科の授業を手伝っていました。けれどもジョンは何度か骨折してしまい、先生は彼をかわいそうに思いました。
先生は、長年の働きぶりの骸骨には引退の権利があると考え、おじいちゃんに電話して、がいこつのジョンを雇いたいかどうかたずねました。
「もちろん！」と、おじいちゃんは答えました。
彼は車をいじくり回し、エンジンをかけると町へと走り出しました……。

学校の教室で使われていたがいこつの「ジョン」。
ジョンは、南エストニアの森の中の農場に住むおじいちゃんとばあちゃんに引き取られ、修理されて家族の一員になります。
そして、ジョンは日々の日常の中で小さな冒険を繰り広げます。

トリイヌ・ラーは、エストニアの作家です。
南エストニアのヴォル郡（Võru County）の田舎で、3人の幼い子供たち、数学者の夫、そして「自意識過剰な猫」と一緒に暮らしています。
イラストは、エストニアのイラストレーター、グラフィックデザイナー、写真家、歌手であるマルヤ＝リイサ・プラッツが手がけています。

死や喪失をテーマにしつつ、ユーモアと温かみあふれる日常を描いた絵本です。
