エドワードはごく普通の少年でした。
彼は朝起きて、服を着て、朝食をとり、学校へ行き、ゲームをして、夕食を食べて、寝ました。

時々エドワードは物を蹴ったりもしました。
「エドワード、君は荒っぽい子だね。いつも何かを蹴っている。君は世界で一番荒っぽい子だ」
エドワードはどんどん荒っぽくなっていきました。

……日が経ち週が経ち、週が経ち月が経つにつれ、エドワードはますます不器用になり、残酷になり、騒々しく、散らかし、汚く、意地悪で、無礼で、乱暴になっていき、ある日彼らは言いました……。

ごく普通の男の子だったエドワードは、事あるごとに大人たちから過度に叱られてしまいます。そうして、彼は本当に「世界でいちばんおぞましい男の子」になってしまうのです。

けれでもある日、今度はエドワードの行動を肯定的に受け入れて、大人たちは彼を褒め始めます。
