ヘクラは、ある風の強い日に、年老いたラキの人生に突然現れました。
ヘクラの小さな体は、まるでプラタナスのサマラのようにくるとまわりました。
ラキは最初、昆虫か鳥かと思いました。

ラキは長年、孤独に過ごしてきたため、ヘクラの出現は彼を心の底から揺さぶりました。
ラキは静寂と秩序が好きでしたが、ヘクラはそうではありませんでした。
ヘクラは絶えず小さな大惨事を引き起こし、ラキの大切な日課をあまり気にませんでした。

ヘクラが来て以来、ラキの家はすっかり様変わりしました。
実際、ラキの人生そのものがひっくり返ったのです。壊れたり、なくなったりしたものは、小さな花束に置き換えられるようになりました。
やがて、年老いたラキはヘクラのために場所を作ることを覚えました。彼は小さな間に合わせのベッドを作り、自分の大きなベッドの隣に置きました。

ラキは言葉が大好きでした。彼はいつも、ルピナスやキョクアジサシのように、すべての植物や鳥を正しい名前で呼ぶようにしていました。
毎晩、ラキとヘクラは大きなベッドで一緒に丸くなり、ラキはヘクラに美しい物語を聞かせてくれました。
ある夜、電気を消す直前、ラキはヘクラを見て言いました。
「君の名前はヘクラだ」
二人は、本当に素敵な名前だと思って微笑みました……。

ヘクラ山とラキ山は、この物語の着想の元となったアイスランドの二つの火山の名前です。

アイスランドの二つの火山に着想を得た『ヘクラとラキ』は、人生の美しさと残酷さ、時を経て受け継がれる知識、そして死によって芽生える不思議な安らぎを描いた、心安らぐ詩的な物語です。
