「メタファー」という言葉は、古代ギリシャ語の「metaphorá（移送）」から来ています。これは文字通り「meta-（渡して）」と「pherein（運ぶ）」に由来しています。
現代ギリシャ語でも、metaphorésはトラックや貨物輸送、銀行振込のような往復運動を指す言葉として使われています。
言語の世界では、メタファーとは別の文脈に「移送」される言葉であり、西洋言語ではこのように理解されています。

哲学で用いられるメタファーには共通点があります。
それは概念的であるということです。抽象的な言葉や概念、つまり無形のものを、目に見えるものへと翻訳し、私たちを感覚の海へと誘います。概念はイメージとなります。

けれども、その内側にはさらに重要な何かが脈動しています。
それは、私たちの周りの世界、私たちが身を置く環境、つまり色彩や形、生命、血、そして匂いを照らす、独特で啓示的な光です。

このようにして、哲学的メタファーは抽象性を周縁から一掃し、私たちを何度も思考へと誘います。つまり、私たちの世界と自分自身を理解する方法は、実はメタファーによって本質的に形作られているのではないだろうか、と自問自答させるのです。
