主人公の女性は、手品師、嘘つき、トリックスター、泥棒、そして「スタント・ジャーナリスト」という多面的な人物です。

1876年に発表されたSemyon Panovの忘れ去られた中編小説『Tri suda, ili ubiistvo vo vremia bala』（三つの裁判、あるいは舞踏会での殺人）を基盤としつつ、Carol Adlamが大胆に再構築した作品です。

原作の登場人物（エレナ、アンナ・ボブロワ、司法調査官、警察官ココロリンなど）を借用しつつ、物語は、初期ロシア犯罪小説が描いた司法制度・初期法医学・潜入ジャーナリズムの境界線を掘り下げ、列車内でドストエフスキー本人を「盗難容疑」で逮捕する場面など、遊び心あふれるメタフィクション的要素を散りばめています。

1870年代ロシアの多様な視覚文化——lubki（民衆木版画）、ゾエトロープ、ペッパーズ・ゴースト、幻灯機（Magic Lantern）、ピープショー、シャドウパペット、切手、円筒変形鏡など——を巧みに取り入れ、単なるミステリーではなく「見ること」「真実を視覚的に捉えること」を作品で試みています。
