この本のアイデアは、1966年の春、ロンドンのハムステッドに住んでいた頃に思いついたそうです。

・小さくて四角く、1歳児、あるいはもっと小さな子どもでも手に持ちやすいサイズにすること。
・印刷コストを抑えること。そのため、黒と赤の2色だけにする。
・すべてのページが、すべての子どもたちが共感できるような、ありふれた日常の出来事について書かれていること。

オイリ・タンニネンは、この三つを心がけて、日本の折り紙を破ったり切ったりして、そこに絵を描き足していきました。

1967年フィンランドで最も美しい本の一つに選ばれました。
