1977年夏、NASAによって打ち上げられたボイジャー2号とその双子のボイジャーは、木星と土星に到達した最初の探査機の一つでした。

両探査機は木星と土星の衛星の初めての拡大写真を撮影し、色鮮やかな地表、活火山、そして凍てつくほど冷たい間欠泉の様子を明らかにしました。その後、2機の探査機は分離しました。
ボイジャー1号は星間空間へと向かい、ボイジャー2号は天王星と海王星へと向かいました。1986年、ボイジャー2号は天王星を通過した最初の人工物となり、10個の新しい衛星と2つの新しい環を発見しました。
3年後、探査機は海王星を通過した最初の人工物として、再び歴史に名を残しました。そこで、5つの新しい衛星、4つの新しい環、そして「大暗斑」（地球ほどの大きさの巨大な回転する嵐）を発見しました。
