『The Hunting of the Snark』（スナーク狩り）は、ベルマンとその風変わりな仲間たち（肉屋、パン屋、ビーバー、仕立て屋など）が、最も神秘的で捉えどころのない生き物、スナークを求めて冒険する物語です。

この本は、ルイス・キャロルが1876年に発表した有名なナンセンス詩で、正式タイトルは The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits（スナーク狩り ― 8つの苦悶）です。

1959年、愛されるムーミンシリーズの作者でありイラストレーターでもあるトーベ・ヤンソンは、ルイス・キャロルの傑作『スナーク狩り』のスウェーデン語版の挿絵を依頼されました。
神秘的な魅力あふれる挿絵は、キャロルの物語の美しさと奇妙さを生き生きと描き出し、過去150年間で最も偉大な児童文学作家2人の才能が紙の上で融合したかのようです。
けれどもムーミン谷の物語が世界中で大成功を収める中、ヤンソンによる『スナーク狩り』のユニークな版は忘れ去られ、50年以上もの間入手困難なままでした。

ヤンソンの挿絵は、Henry Holidayのオリジナル版（1876年、細密で少しグロテスク）とは全く違うアプローチです。柔らかく気まぐれな線画、ムーミンのような可愛らしさと不気味さの絶妙なバランス。海、島、奇妙な生き物が幻想的に描かれ、キャロルの言葉遊びが視覚的に生きています。

In 1959, Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin Valley and its magical inhabitants, was commissioned to illustrate a Swedish edition of Lewis Carroll's miniature masterpiece. It proved an inspired choice, as the enigmatic charms of Jansson's illustrative style bring to life the beauty and strangeness of Carroll's tale.
