1856年7月10日、セルビア（当時のオーストリア帝国領）で雷雨の真夜中に生まれたニコラは、農場で動物たちと遊び、猫の毛をなでて静電気を起こすことに驚くなど、自然と電気への好奇心が早くから芽生えていました。
幼い頃から発明家気質で、蛙を捕る道具や虫の羽で動く回転モーターなどを考案したといわれています。
成長し青年になると、電気工学を学び、ヨーロッパからアメリカへ移住します。そこでトーマス・エジソンとの出会いと対立します。
彼の最も大きな発明は、交流電流（AC）誘導モーターです。これにより長距離送電が可能になり、現代の電力供給の基盤となりました。
他にもレーダー、無線通信、遠隔操作技術などの特許の取得、1893年のシカゴ万国博覧会での成功や、ジョージ・ウェスティングハウスと協業が語られていきます。
生涯を通じて動物（特に鳩）への愛情が深くかったと言われています。
ニューヨークでは「Pigeon Charmer of New York（ニューヨークの鳩使い）」と呼ばれ、負傷した鳩を看護するなどしていましたが、貧困と無理解のなか孤独な晩年を過ごしました。
