物語の出発点は、1970年代半ばの大学時代にさかのぼります。
チャーリーとフランは親友同士でしたが、フランがチャーリーの友人エイドリアンと付き合い始めたことで疎遠になっていきます。
時は流れて1995年。
チャーリーはブリストル郊外の湿ったフラットで、大工のパートナー、ビルと平凡な日々を送っています。そこへフランから思いがけない連絡が届きます。フランと、戦争特派員である夫エイドリアンが田舎に買った、25部屋もある古い牧師館「The Wreck」で、一緒に暮らさないか、という誘いでした。

「これは必ず過ぎ去る、と私は思いながら、決してそうならないようにと祈っていた。」
――理想を掴み取ろうとする切実さと、それがいずれ儚く過ぎ去るという予感が、物語全体に流れています。

チャーリーは「もう一度青春をやり直せる」チャンスを見出し、ビルを説き伏せて移り住みます。
最初は夕食を持ち寄り即興のパーティーが開かれるユートピア的な日々でしたが、階級の違いや嫉妬、くすぶる性的な引力が徐々に表面化し、理想は静かに崩れていきます。

物語は前半3部がチャーリー視点、終盤の1部がフラン視点で語られ、この語り手の交代によって関係の陰影が新たな角度から照らし出されます。
描かれているのは、愛と嫉妬と欲望が絡まり合う関係の「厄介さ」と、そこから自分自身を見つけ出すまでの道のりです。
女性同士の友情が持つ両義性――親密さと羨望が表裏一体であること――と、階級と芸術の居心地の悪い相互依存が、軽やかでありながら容赦のない筆致で描かれています。

批評家からも読者からも高い評価を受けており、Observer紙のKillian Foxは「今月のグラフィックノベル」に選出。
Bookmunchは「前作からの大きな飛躍」と評しています。Amy Liptrotは「まさにごちそう」、Jessica Stanleyは「美しく語られた美しい物語」、Joanna Walshは「階級と芸術の相互依存を、これほど正確に、優しさで包んで描ける作家は他にいない」と称賛しました。

2026年4月、Jonathan Capeから刊行された本作は、2022年の『Alison』に続く2作目のイラスト付き小説です。コミックのパネル、散文、水彩画が織り交ぜられた形式は「小説」とも「グラフィックノベル」とも言い切れません。
