ある暑い日、一頭のライオンが帽子を買いに町へやってきました。
けれども町の人々はライオンを見た途端に恐れをなし、箒や麺棒、パンの塊まで武器にして追い払おうとします。
逃げ惑ったライオンが辿り着いたのは、犬小屋の下――そこで女の子のアイリスが彼を見つけます。

アイリスは彼を「優しいライオン」と思い、家に隠しました。
傷ついた足に包帯を巻き、たてがみをとかす。ベッドの上で一緒に跳びはねて遊べば、その音で母親に見つかりそうになる――そんなドタバタを繰り返しながら、少女とライオンは仲良くなっていきます……。

ヘレン・スティーヴンスが文章と挿絵の両方を手がけたデビュー作にあたるシリーズの第一作です。
ロンドンからノーサンバーランドの海辺の町に移り住んだ際、石造りの町並みと海霧のかかる銀灰色の風景に、鮮やかな黄色いライオンが迷い込んでくるイメージが浮かんだのが着想のきっかけだったとそうです。
リチャード・スカーリーやH・A・レイ、ルートヴィヒ・ベーメルマンスらを思わせる、ノスタルジックで温かみのある水彩とインクの線が特徴的です。
