アンドロメダから、キツネ座（Vulpecula）まで、一つひとつの星座について、見つけ方、見える時期、最も明るい星、名前の由来となった神話や物語が語られていきます。

人々がどのように夜空に絵を見るようになったのでしょうか。
望遠鏡の発明や、世界各地への航海が、新たな星々の発見につながっていった歴史も紹介されています。
星座の図案そのものは、数千年前の古い文化の中で生まれたものです。
それを初めて一覧にまとめたのは、紀元150年、ギリシャの学者プトレマイオスでした。著書『アルマゲスト』には、バビロニアやシュメールの文献も踏まえた、ギリシャ神話由来の物語が数多く収められています。

その約1000年後、天文学者アル・スーフィーがこの仕事を引き継ぎます。プトレマイオスが名前を付けなかった星々に名を与え、明るさを示す「等級」という考え方も記録に残しました。
二人が記した48の星座は、今も「古代の星座」として夜空に残り続けています。

星図は、北半球と南半球、それぞれの天の極を中心に描かれています。ヨーロッパの神話体系だけでなく、非西洋圏の星座の見方にも触れられているのが特徴です。

巻末には用語集も収められています。ジャケットには箔押しとレーザーカットの装飾が施され、鑑賞にも耐える一冊に仕上がっています。

作者のサラ・ジリンガムは、受賞歴のあるアートディレクター・デザイナーです。Chronicle Booksで児童書部門のデザインディレクターを務め、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校などで教鞭も執ってきました。
