ビネッテ・シュレーダーさんは、1939年にドイツのハンブルクに生まれた絵本作家で、スイスのバーゼルで商業美術や石版印刷などを学びました。
1969年に最初の絵本『お友だちのほしかったルピナスさん』を発表してから、不思議で美しい世界を描いた作品を数多く発表しました。
代表作には、『わにくん』『ラ・タ・タ・タム』『ぞうさんレレブム』などがあります。
彼女の絵本は、内容や芸術的表現においても流行に左右されず、時代を感じさせない作風で、シュルレアリスムの絵画を思わせると言われています。1997年には、全業績に対してドイツ児童文学賞特別賞を受賞しました。
残念ながら、2022年7月5日に83歳で亡くなられました。
