本書は2019年、第一次世界大戦で締結されたヴェルサイユ条約１００周年を記念して出版されました。
精巧に表現された世界大戦の様子は、ミニチュアだからなのか生々しくなく、遠い出来事のようにも感じられ、なんとも不思議な感覚を覚えます。
この戦争における戦闘は、塹壕線とも呼ばれ、塹壕を構築しながら戦闘が繰り返されてきました。また新しい兵器が登場し、たくさんの犠牲者を出した戦争でもあります。

主人公は家族に会うために、軍隊を勝手に離れた青年の物語です。軍隊に戻った青年は投獄をされて、裁判を待つ身となってしまいます。そこへ、友人が訪ねてきて……。
