街から遠く離れた村に、ミス・ムーンという名前の女の子が住んでいました。
とても大きな青い空の下、どこまでどこまでも田んぼが広がっている場所でした。

太陽が怒ったように空からぶら下がっている暑いある日のことです。
ミス・ムーンは遠くから歩いてくるおじいさんを見かけました。彼は竹の杖を持っていました。竹の杖にはカラフルな紙がたくさん結ばれていました。
「おじいさんが持っている、その素敵なものはなに？」
女の子が問いかけると、
「これは紙の花の木だよ。ちいさなねずみちゃん」おじいさんは応えました。
「銅貨一枚で二つの花を買えるよ。それでもし種がついていれば、たぶんだけど、木を育てられるかもしれないな」
「けど、あたしは銅貨一枚をもってないの」
女の子は悲しげに言いました。
「それなら、」とおじいさんは、いちばん小さな紙の花を女の子に渡しました。その花には小さな種がついていました。
「育ててごらん。たぶん育つよ。約束はできんがね」
おじいさんは、手を振って立ち去りました。

おじいさんが持ってきた、種のついた紙の花。ミス・ムーンは種を育てることはできたのでしょうか。
