昔々、小さなおばけちゃんが、スコットランドのお城に住んでいました。
おばけちゃんのパパママはもう若くなく（？）、驚かすことにちょっと疲れていました。
だからスコットランドのパパママ幽霊は、娘のおばけちゃんに驚かせ方を教えようと考えました。

壁からにゅっ！と出る方法。
頭にオノを刺して歩き回る方法。
布団の間に入って驚かせる方法……。

おばけちゃんのパパママがやると城の住人は驚くのですが、小さなおばけちゃんがやると驚いてくれません（おばけちゃんが怪我をすると、お城の住人は手当すらしてくれます）。

どうやったら驚かせる方法を学べるだろう。
「スコットランドで一番怖い、ホイッスルフィールドの幽霊のところに行かせよう」
そうして小さなおばけちゃんは、ホイッスルフィールドの幽霊のところへ、怖がらせ方を学びいきました。

けれどもホイッスルフィールドの幽霊は思っていたのと違い……。

どんなに怖がらせようとしても、子どものかわいさは出てしまうのですね。
