むかしむかしある小さな村に、大きな木が立っていました。太陽が空を横切ると、大きな木の影がゆらゆらと揺れました。

ある日のことです。
大きな木に旅人がやってきました。
木陰には村人たちが、休んでいました。
旅人も仲間に入ろうと、木陰に足を踏みいれようとしました。
すると突然、叫び声が響きました。
「全員、ここから出てけ！誰に断って、ここに座っているんだ」
叫んだのはこの土地を所有しているお金持ちでした。「この土地は俺のもの。この大きな木も俺のもの」

旅人は言いました。
「この木陰だけ買わせてください」と。

（この旅人は愚か者だな。けれども金を稼ぐにはいい機会だ）
お金持ちは思いました。

そうして、旅人はお金持ちにお金を払い、大きな木の木陰を買いました。それから木陰を村人に使わせました。

やがて日が傾いていきます。
影はどんどんと伸びていき……。
