おじいちゃんを訪ねたある日のこと。
ぼくは冷蔵庫の買い物リストの横に貼られていた一枚の葉書のことをたずねました。
「ああ」おじいちゃんはため息をつきました。
「これは遙かなる谷じゃな」
「それは、どこにあるの？」ぼくはたずねました。なんだかその言葉の響きが気に入りました。
「まあ、北のほうだよ。遠い、遠いよ」とおじいちゃんは答えた。

次の夜から、おじいちゃんは遥かなる谷について、もっと詳しく話してくれました。
「とても遠いから、最初は船でいき、それから長い旅をしないとたどり着けないところなんじゃ。そこは特別な場所でな、行ったことがある人たちは、今でも夢がいっぱいだというんじゃ。わしも、いつもそう思っとる」

遥かなる谷について物語を聞かされたこぐまくん。
そこに行きたい！とおじいちゃんにお願いしました。
おじいちゃんは、こぐまくんに長い旅に備えるための知識や技術を学ばせます。しばらくしてから、ようやく旅に出ることになりました……

Cecilia Heikkika はカナダのバンクーバーでデザインを学び、IKEA などでグラフィック デザイナーとして働いた後、児童文学作家兼イラストレーターになりました。
彼女の作品の多くは自然や動物を題材としています。
『Finding The Way To FARAWAY VALLEY』では「未開発のまま残されている自然のごくわずかな一角」をどうやって保存をしていくかをテーマにしています。

セシリアは現在、コーギーのモチと一緒にスウェーデンのダーラナに住んでます。
