この絵本は、グリム童話「死神の名づけ親」の再考であり、イギリスの児童文学作家サリー・ニコルズによって書かれました。

物語は、貧しい漁師が自分の息子の洗礼に死神を代父（Godfather）に選び、死神から贈られた贈り物が家族の幸運の鍵であると信じて、貪欲になり、死神を欺こうとするというものです。
しかし、死神は誰も本当に騙すことはできないことを漁師に教えます。
