バーナバスは半分ネズミで、半分ゾウの実験動物。
かれはパーフェクト・ペットというショップの地下にある秘密のラボに住んでいました。彼の記憶はラボの風景だけ。時々、友だちの小さな虫が、外の世界のことを話しにきてくれます。

ラボにはほかにもたくさんの実験動物がいます。彼らを世話しているのはみどりいろの宇宙服を着た人間たち。

けれどもある日、彼らを閉じ込めていたガラス瓶に、【失敗作】と赤いスタンプが押されてしまいます。

小さな虫がやってきて、きみはリサイクルされるんだよ、と語ります。けれどもバーナバスは自分の今の姿が好きだったので、ガラス瓶から脱出して、逃げる決心をするのでした。

ねずみとゾウを掛け合わせた動物が主人公というところから、ちょっとドキッとしますね。どの動物たちも実験で生まれた異形のものたち。けれども、お互いに助け合いながら、生きていきます。

The Fan Brothersによる、ちょっと変わったファンタジー。細かいところまで描き込まれていて、何回も読みたくなる絵本です。
