少年がひろったその帽子は、いつも彼が拾っていた色々なもの ―光る小石だったり、死んだ虫、明るく輝くホタルとか ―と同じように見えました。
乱暴な三月の風が運んできたのでしょうか？

少年は帽子をかぶるのに苦労しました。
小さすぎたからではなく、帽子が水浸しだったからです。
つばから水がこぼれ落ち、頭の後ろを伝わって流れ落ちました。
帽子をかぶると、少年はとても幸せな気持ちになりました。そしてなんにでもなれる気がしたのです。

帽子をかぶりながら少年は空想の中でいろいろなものに変身して楽しみます。
行進する兵士、カーボーイ、大どろぼう……。彼の空想力はとても豊かで楽しいものです。

やがて、帽子の持ち主がやってきます。
帽子の主人はどんな人なのでしょうか？

ウラジミール・ボブリは、1898年ウクライナ生まれ。ハリコフ美術学校で学んだ後、舞台美術の仕事を始めます。ロシア革命期に国外に脱出し、ニューヨークへ移住。グラフィックデザイナー、アートディレクターとして、絵本、雑誌、デザインなど幅広く活躍しました。

時代を超えていつまでも読み継がれていくような、そんな魅力を持った絵本ですね。
