ある日の午後、小さな赤い鳥が、森のように緑のふさふさした尾を持つライオンを見ました。鳥は、こんなに珍しくてきれいなものは見たことがありませんでした。
それを見ているだけで、彼女は幸せでした。
「ライオンさん、ライオンさん！」赤い鳥は声をかけました。
「どうしてあなたのしっぽはこんなに緑色なの？」
ライオンは鳥の言葉がわかりませんでした。
ライオンは彼女がただ鳴いているだけだと思い、鳥に微笑みました。
鳥はオレンジのお花畑でころがったり、鼻をくんくんしたり、蝶をおいかけるライオンを見つめていました。

次の日の朝、洞窟から出てきたライオンのしっぽはオレンジの花のように、蝶のようにオレンジ色をしていました。
「ライオンさん、ライオンさん！」
鳥はおどろきながらさえずりました。
「どうしてあなたの尻尾はオレンジ色なの？」
ライオンは鳥の言葉が理解できなかったので、赤い鳥に微笑みました……。

毎日色が変わっていくライオンのしっぽ。
どうしてなのでしょうね。
