ハンス・クリスチャン・アンデルセンは、1805 年にデンマークのオーデンセで生まれました。
彼は孤独で貧しい幼少期を、自分の想像力に慰められながら過ごしていたそうです。
14 歳のとき、コペンハーゲンの劇場に逃げ込み、そこで有力なパトロンの支援により執筆活動をはじめます。
彼の詩、小説、旅行記は絶大な人気を博しました。しかし、彼の名を不滅にしたのは、1835 年から1875 年に亡くなるまでに出版された最初の子供向け物語である「アンデルセン童話集」でした。
